About this deal

I reported being raped to a member of The Provisional IRA and I was subject to a Kangaroo Court that was Chaired by JB O'Hagan, who was Provisional IRA Quarter Master (and other roles) and later a Sinn Fein candidate for the NI Assembly elections in 1983. The conclusion of the Kangaroo Court was that I was to remain silent and Michael Lynagh would be moved to Dublin. The book and it's contents are a very rare mix of honesty, brutality, many forms of abuse, mental health crisis, suicide, addiction but also of insight, hope, positivity and the various stages of recovery. AM: My advice would be to make sure you have good support in your life. Good people around you who will be honest if they think that revisiting certain things is potentially self-harming for you. For me writing about it helped. But depending on the person it could potentially be a trigger. So take advice from good people around you. But most of all trust in your own gut. That’s what I did. I knew I was ready. And not in a self-deluding way. I just knew it was time.

AM: Airy-fairy means even though I believe in a Higher Power I’m not suffering from delusions of grandeur or anything. I’ve not got my head in the clouds or suffer from being a fantasist about it. I hope that makes sense. I just believe something greater is at work, guiding and protecting me. I have OCD - which can feel like an addiction at times - so I really related to Aidan’s story, and appreciated his heart-wrenching honesty throughout.

If any of your readers who write want advice it would be to believe in yourself and your idea. I almost didn’t pursue this because of self-doubt. Ignore the negative head, pitch hard, don’t take the rejections personally, and persevere! Interview: Aidan Martin, Author of Euphoric Recall Interview: Aidan Martin, Author of Euphoric Recall

There are times when a book just hits a reader in a certain way that makes one speechless. I am in such a situation. I have been staring at this computer screen, rewriting and deleting my first sentence. There have been few occasions when this has happened but in the case of Euphoric Recall, it was strong. I would recommend it to anyone, regardless of whether you’ve got a mental illness or addiction, as addicts, as Adian says himself, can be anyone, and the only way to break the cycle is through brutal honesty like the kind shown in this book.Aidan Martin's Europhic Recall does exactly that. It's a pandora's box of a book, in that it tells a story of addiction, abuse, pain, and cancer, but of hope too. The book covers topics that are not spoken about enough, in a way that highlights that addiction can happen to anyone. Trauma can happen to anyone. Not only that, it’s possible to turn your life around and use your experiences to help others! I knew before I even opened the book this would be a hard hitting memoir. I was very apprehensive to read this one but once I read the introduction I knew this would be an essential read. I had goosebumps reading the introduction and from there on in I was immersed into Aidans story from being groomed, addcition, family struggles to being a father and getting his degree he ends the book with a sense of promise. I’m in the process of launching a charity which will aim to support people suffering poverty, social isolation, and low level mental health.

Euphoric Recall by Aidan Martin - Goodreads

Structurally, this book is really well-formed and written, and it’s a brisk read that I found hard to put down (for all my mental health has been a bit all over the place recently). My book arrived, I began reading. I closed the book when it got late, yet could not sleep without knowing how it ends. I returned to my sitting room and finished the memoir. 4am had passed and I had work early, but I finished it! Caoláin and married to Wexford Republican, Maitiú Ó Murchadha who died in 2020. I found both Pádraigín and Maitiú to be traditional republicans and I often had Both Aidan and Martin's sets were extremely well received by all who attended, including local residents, organisations and charities and sparked lots of conversations about local communities, people and stories. AM: It took about a year of researching and pitching. But I was a completely unknown author. I queried many places but I found my home with Guts and I would put that down to another thing I consider as being ‘meant to be.’

Hard hitting memoir. Aiden Martin gives us the realism of poor schooling, abuse, heartbreak, addiction and recovery. The Bound Together project uses books to help raise awareness of the impact of drugs and alcohol on families, and it was amazing to hear from Shirley and Aidan about their journey together. In Euphoric Recall, Aidan says she is the strongest person he knows and last night we got to see that as she shared openly and honestly with us. The audience were all brilliant not just with their questions but how they interacted with each other.”Over fifty local people attended a Bound Together event on 10 March organised by Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drug s at West Lothian College and heard from local author Aidan Martin and his mum. LL: In another section you wrote, “There is nothing wrong with a fun fetish between consenting adults.” One thing I think you do very nicely is to draw a line between healthy sexuality that some people might find atypical, and unhealthy sexuality that causes harm to participants. You also wrote about sex addiction versus degradation addiction, which is a very nuanced and important conversation. Do you have any ideas about educating people about the difference? He says he applauds the Scottish Government for ‘holding their hands up’ and admitting drastic measures are needed to help lower drug deaths. Aiden explained: “I thought I was daft with no academic bone in my body, but after volunteering at a shelter I felt the buzz of helping others and knew I wanted to go to college and try.
